You just described crossing a street in New York. ¡Buena suerte!

I lived in Austrailia and not only do they have crosswalks directly across a street but they have "kitty-corner" crosswalks so can risk your live walking diaganolly across a street.

By the by, in California, pedistrians DO have the right-of-way.

I really enjoy your Culture Tips. Twenty years ago we visited Guadalajara, MX and were told that the cars would blink their headlights at pedestrians trying to cross. It meant they were coming through and you had better step back. In 2006, while living in Zapopan(near Guadalajara)my grandson and I would take walks and we always crossed at the stoplights and never had any problems. Actually when driving I found people more courteous than some of the places I have lived in the U.S.

My wife and I have been to Santa Cruz and Cochabamba, Bolivia twice in the last 18 months. My son, who lives in Cochabamba, warned us about crossing streets. We learned quickly the art of dodging fast moving cars. My wife was initially shocked while we were in Santa Cruz because the taxi drivers did not seem to notice stop signs or signal lights when driving. It's better than paying for a roller coaster ride at an American amusement park (and cheaper). We love Cochabamba! Better drivers there and it's a beautiful city.
