Blonde jokes could take on a whole new meaning!!
In most of Latin America, the word for blonde is "rubio" [ruby-oh]. In Mexico however, they say "güero" [gweh-row]. The interesting thing about this word is that to a Latin American, anyone that doesn't have completely dark black hair is considered "rubio" or "güero" (blonde). Some Latins will refer to their friends, whose hair is lighter than "dark black", as being blonde. As we talked about before, many Mexicans call Americans "gringos", but many of them also call Americans "güeros" because of the lighter hair many of them have. Don't worry, neither is offensive.
The first time I heard someone with "brunette" hair referred to as being "blonde", I thought maybe the Spanish speaker was color blind. I would show people pictures of my family and they would referr to all of them as being blonde, even though most my family had brown hair. This really threw me for a loop and took me a while to get used to. But then, the more I heard it, the more I realized that to a Latin American, anyone that has hair lighter than "dark black" is considered "rubio" or "güero" (blonde).
If we look at it from that point of view, blonde jokes now affect a lot larger portion of our population.
Whoever invented blonde jokes anyway? I think we should find out and send them this newsletter. According to this new information, the inventor is probably BLONDE!!
