Learn Spanish Culture ----- Mistakes Americans Make
This week's culture tidbit deals with something that I hear Americans do all the time and it drives me crazy. I wanted to let you know about it so you'll know how to do it correctly. Instead of dealing with the Latin culture itself, this lesson deals with a Spanish phrase that has been integrated into our culture.
Often, in everyday life, someone will unintentionally do something to us. Many Americans will respond by saying "No problem" in what they think is the Spanish language -- "No problemo". This is wrong wrong wrong! You do not create Spanish words by tacking on an "o" at the end of English words. This is an incorrect translation technique. In only a very few cases, this little "o"-at-the-end trick works, but with most words it doesn't. The correct way to say "No problem" is -- are you ready for this? "No hay problema". (The word "hay" is pronounced "eye", and the "h" is silent). Try saying "No hay problema" out loud.
I really wanted to let you know about this so you can become a culturally educated American. Nothing would make me happier than to see the "No problemo" epidemic slowly die. Please spread the word by forwarding this e-mail to your friends to everyone will know how to say this correctly.
